Hi Everyone,
Coming from the Raleigh's News and Observer's here's a good feature lede on hooch.
http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1590405.html
RALEIGH -- Consumers who are cooking in instead of dining out, buying generic, nursing the old car along and brewing their own coffee may soon be able to indulge themselves in one area. High-end liquor in North Carolina is about to get cheaper.
Starting Aug. 1, the cost of a half gallon of Grey Goose vodka will drop from $71.95 to $59.95. The cost of a fifth of Absolut vodka will drop from $21.95 to $19.95. And, for those who can afford it, a half gallon of Glenmorangie scotch is slated to sell for $89.95 instead of $99.95.
Why the price break?
Because the high-end booze has been taking a sales hit as consumers have increasingly turned to bargain-priced liquor. Distillers of the good stuff are chopping their prices to hang on to recession-weary customers.
This lede is intriguing. I didn't know it was about alcohol prices going down until the second sentence. I wanted to read more and find out why and how alcohol prices could go down, which wasn't explained until the third graf.
Here's an example of a good hard news lede about the race for Governor in California. Gets right to the point and answers the What, Where, When, Why, and How in a succinct and tight sentence. It is clearly written and not overloaded with information. I read it once and got it:
- Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has yet to call himself a candidate for governor, is leading a critical race: He's attracting more high-end donors than San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the only declared candidate for 2010, according to the latest campaign reports.
